Micro vs Macro Influencers: What the Measured Data Says (2026)

Updated 2026-08-10

The micro-vs-macro debate runs on anecdotes: someone's nano campaign that outconverted a celebrity deal, someone else's micro program that died in spreadsheet management. We can do better — our index measures engagement, pricing and audience composition across every size tier daily. Three findings settle most of the argument; the rest is about which job you are hiring the creator for.

Three measured facts

1. Audience quality falls as size grows. Crossing thousands of measured audience profiles with follower tier, the share of accounts reaching practitioner or decision-maker audiences drops sharply from small to large — in the current run, sub-10K accounts reach professional audiences at several times the rate of 1M+ accounts (live table). Big accounts are not reaching more valuable people; they are reaching more, and more casual, people.

2. Large accounts do not earn their linear price. Fair pricing per 1,000 followers, computed from real average engagement, runs a measurable premium for small accounts (live numbers) — larger followings carry more dormant and bought followers, so paying big accounts at a linear per-follower rate overpays for silence.

3. Platform moves engagement far more than size does. On the peak-post metric, the spread between platform medians runs to dozens of times, while the spread between size tiers is small (benchmarks). The famous "small crushes big on engagement" folklore is average-metric-specific — pick the platform first, then benchmark within it.

Where macro still wins

If the job is awareness or halo, buy macro and measure reach. If the job is conversions, the measured facts above all point the same direction.

The honest cost of going micro

Operations. Twenty small deals mean twenty negotiations, briefs and follow-ups — and sourcing is the hidden multiplier, since on some platforms only a small share of creators publish a contact channel (the gap is roughly 8×). Quality variance is real too: small does not mean authentic, and roughly one in eight indexed accounts is flagged for suspected inflated followers. The workflow that keeps micro programs cheap: filter by audience match first (Koinon Link does this by default, with fake-flagged accounts quarantined), keep the upper engagement half, prioritise reachable creators, and pilot small with tracked links before scaling winners.
